This week’s DIY is a follow-up to our post covering geeky nail art you can buy with an example of just one of the ways you can make your own geeky nails to wear.
For those of us who might not be able to hand paint such tiny surfaces, decoupaging a set of fake nails with comic book pages is a great way to decorate your nails with geeky flair.
Supplies Needed
- Set of Fake Nails
- Comic Book
- Mod Podge
- Foam Brush
- Scissors
- Clear Nail Polish
- Glitter Nail Polish/Rhinestones (optional)
Given that we’ve presented many a decoupage DIY in the past, I’ll keep this DIY short and simple.
I picked up a set of fake nails for this project at Target. You can find fake nails just about anywhere – Wal-Mart, CVS, Walgreens, probably even the supermarket! While I picked up a box of loose acrylic nails, it would probably be easier to get those sets that come attached to a central plastic piece, like these, when it comes to decoupaging.
My original idea to decoupage some fake nails came after stumbling across this great spread in one of my Marvel comics that had mini cover pictures of the Marvel titles. They were the perfect size to put on some nails!
I didn’t do it for this DIY, but I would recommend scuffing up the surface of the nails with some sandpaper before starting the decoupage process. It helps the paper to adhere better. You’ll undoubtedly get some folds and creases in your nails as you decoupage the comics on due to the curved surface. I cut out a piece of comic bigger than the nail and gradually trimmed it down throughout the decoupage process until it was flush with the edges of the nail.
Once the decoupaged comic nail is properly trimmed, you’re ready to go. Simple follow the instructions that came with your fake nails set to attach them, and finish it off with a coat or two of clear nail polish. You could even jazz it up more by adding a topcoat of glitter polish, or even gluing on a small rhinestone!
I only decoupaged the thumb nails for this DIY to serve as an example. While you could decoupage an entire set of nails for your fingertips, another option would be to decoupage just one nail – like the thumb or index finger – and paint the rest of the fake nails a solid color, allowing the one decoupaged nail to be an accent piece to the overall look of your nails. This is a great option for those of you wanting to be a little more subtle with your geeky style, and who might not be allowed to have super colorful/loud nails in the workplace.
I can’t wait to pop these nails on for the next convention I go to! We’d love to see the results if any of you decide to try this DIY, share your photos with us on Facebook and Twitter.
Loooooooooove this.
this will be so fun when I start back to school. Love all the decoupage projects you ladies come up with.
